Tunga: The Two-Dimensional Works

Tunga: The Two-Dimensional Works

TUNGA CATALOGUE RAISONNÉ: The Two-Dimensional Works is the definitive record of five decades of Tunga's two-dimensional works, from his early drawing production in the 1960s to his final works before his passing in 2016. Featuring over 10,000 works – including drawings, prints, photographs, and works on fabric – the catalogue highlights a lesser-known but integral part of the artist’s practice and is intricately connected to his iconic installations and performances.

With the Tunga Institute leading its research and publication, the catalogue is an evolving, online resource that is free, accessible, and available in both English and Portuguese. The first volume, covering works from the 1960s and 1970s, was released in December 2024, and subsequent volumes – dedicated to works from the 1980s, 1990s, 2000s, and 2010s – will follow in early 2025. The catalogue also includes selected essays by Guy Brett, Paulo Venancio Filho, and Suely Rolnik, as well as comprehensive exhibition and publication histories.

With this publication, Tunga joins a short list of Brazilian artists whose work has been documented in a catalogue raisonné, alongside Cândido Portinari, Iberê Camargo, Eliseu Visconti, Tarsila do Amaral, and Leonilson.

Team

The Tunga Catalogue Raisonné project was initiated in 2021 by the Tunga Institute’s co-founders, Antônio Mourão (Executive Director) and Clara Gerchman (Estate Manager). From 2021 to 2023, the cataloguing phase was led by Christina Gabaglia Penna as General Coordinator, supported by the Tunga Institute’s Museology, Archive, Library, and Research teams. A Consultative Commission oversaw the authentication and certification process.

In 2024, the project entered its editorial phase in collaboration with the Cahiers d'Art Institute, under the supervision of David Grosz, Editorial Director and Chief Digital Officer. The publication was co-edited by Tanja Baudoin and Adriana Francisco, who also translated the material.
