• Christopher Vacchio to present at CAA 2022

  Christopher Vacchio, Director of Research of the Sol LeWitt Wall Drawings Catalogue Raisonné, will present "The Long Lives of Artworks: Cataloguing Sol LeWitt's Wall Drawings" at the 110th CAA Annual Conference on February 19, 2022. This presentation is a part of the session titled The Living Catalogue Raisonné, organized by the Catalogue Raisonné Scholars Association (CRSA). This session will be presented live online from 10:00 to 11:30 a.m. ET.

  Sol LeWitt's wall drawings, conceptual artworks that derive their meaning from the artist's written instructions or drawn plans, pose a complex challenge for catalogers. Because the artworks are not object-based, their cataloging and definition are uniquely difficult. However, LeWitt did not begin using standardized certificates until 1984, nearly twenty years after creating his first wall drawings. It was around this time that LeWitt also began creating what we call "variations" of his wall drawings—either installation variations, where LeWitt made a one-time edit to adapt a given work to a specific architectural setting or exhibition format, or formal variations, in which LeWitt created a new work explicitly based on the old. LeWitt’s previous catalogues raisonnés, published in 1984, 1989, and 1992, did not account for the artist’s ability to change and edit his artworks over time (even after they had been sold). Vacchio's presentation will focus on how assembling a new digital catalogue allowed the team to develop a methodology of cataloging not only the artist’s conception of each work, but also its full history. In doing so, the team collaborated with the artist’s Estate and Studio to develop guidelines based on the artist’s wishes for how the works can be reinstalled and adapted in the future. That process will be continuously integrated into the online catalogue raisonné, and goes hand in hand with the efforts by the Estate to create a program of ensuring the materials of the wall drawings and the knowledge of their installation techniques are maintained in perpetuity.

• An Evening of Sol LeWitt Readings

  The event will stream live on July 8, 2020, at 6pm EST on PCG Studio, Paula Cooper Gallery’s online platform for screenings, performances, conversations, and editorial features.   The event features six readers, most of whom had a close personal bond with LeWitt, including two whose interviews with LeWitt are included in the new publications. Laurie Anderson, Lucinda Childs, Zoe Leonard, and Gary Garrels will be reading interviews live, while Adrian Piper and Nicholas Baume have contributed recorded readings of several LeWitt’s writings.

  Sol LeWitt Writings and Sol LeWitt Interviews collectively chart how LeWitt's artistic practice evolved over time, but also underscore the consistency of his thinking about his art and his conception of authorship. The texts cover a range of topics, from his teaching and relationship to the art world, to his theories of artmaking and of specific groups of work, most notably his wall drawings. The volumes were edited by Lindsay Aveilhé and Chris Vacchio and have been incorporated into the Sol LeWitt Wall Drawings Catalogue Raisonné (Artifex Press, 2018).

  Carina Evangelista, Editor of the Chuck Close Catalogue Raisonné, is guest curator of Special Project: Sol LeWitt at Art Fair Philippines, which takes place February 21-23, 2020.

  The project features two wall drawings: Wall Drawing #869A and Wall Drawing #1217. The latter, LeWitt’s only exclusively text-based work, is made up of the phrase "These words are written on the wall," with the language determined by location. At Art Fair Philippines, the phrase will be appear in Filipino, English, Baybayin, and M’ranaw.

  On Sunday, February 23, from 1-2:30 p.m., Evangelista presents the talk "Sol LeWitt: The Idea Becomes a Machine that Makes the Art" and discusses LeWitt and conceptual art alongside contemporary Filipino artists Poklong Anading, Ringo Bunoan, Lena Cobangbang, Gary-Ross Pastrana, and Gerardo Tan.

  Lindsay Aveilhé, Editor of the Sol LeWitt Wall Drawings catalogue raisonné, is curator of the exhibition Sol LeWitt, which opens at Reykjavík Art Museum on Thursday, February 13, and runs through May 24, 2020.

  On February 13 at 8 p.m., Aveilhé and the master drafters who installed the exhibition discuss LeWitt and his creative process. This talk is followed by the exhibition opening at 9 p.m.

  Artifex Press will partner with Pace Gallery to participate in New York Archives Week, an annual celebration aimed at informing the general public of the diverse array of archival materials available in the New York metropolitan region.

  Ashley Levine, Archivist/Digital Resource Manager at Artifex Press, will present on how Pace Gallery's rich archival resources have informed and contributed to Artifex Press's digital catalogue raisonnés for Agnes Martin and Chuck Close. After the presentation, guests will be invited to view a tabletop display of materials that document Pace’s various locations throughout the years.   The New York Public Library will host the event Art Talks: Sol LeWitt’s Wall Drawings on February 20, 2019 at 6:30 p.m. in honor of the release of the Sol LeWitt Wall Drawings Catalogue Raisonné, the most comprehensive publication of the revered twentieth-century artist’s work to date. The event will take place in the Celeste Auditorium in the Stephen A. Schwarzman Building at 476 Fifth Avenue (42nd St and Fifth Ave).

  Artifex Press and Yale University Art Gallery invite you to a roundtable discussion with three generations of LeWitt's drafters, celebrating the launch of the Sol LeWitt Wall Drawings Catalogue Raisonné. The event will take place at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, January 24, at the Yale University Art Gallery, and is offered in conjunction with the Gallery’s exhibition Sol LeWitt Wall Drawing: Expanding a Legacy. The event is free and open to the public.

Aveilhé and Vacchio will give lectures on the role of the drafter in LeWitt's wall drawings for the symposium "The Machine That Makes the Art?: Interpretation, Collaboration, and Sol LeWitt’s Wall Drawings" at 11 a.m. The symposium will also include Susan Cross, Anna Lovatt, Charles W.   Determined by the Drafter: Collaboration within Reason

  The framework LeWitt devised for his wall drawing practice in 1968 was based on key tenets found in his “Paragraphs on Conceptual Art” (1967), such as the primacy of idea over material and the use of pre-set plans. However, unlike LeWitt’s earlier works, the wall drawings relied on a somewhat precarious chain of events for their genesis, including interpretation by a drafter. This talk will look at the “Determined by the drafter” works to illustrate how LeWitt addressed the collaborative role of the drafter in his wall drawings.

  This talk will track the increasing professionalization of the wall drawings’ drafters from the late 1970s on. LeWitt’s transition from written instructions to drawn plans lessened the room for interpretation, but necessitated a greater degree of collaboration, as his assistants developed and refined specific techniques to install his wall drawings. This group of trusted assistants also acted as extensions of LeWitt’s ethos at installations, reporting back to him and helping translate his concepts into physical form.

  We are excited to announce the European launch of the Sol LeWitt Wall Drawings Catalogue Raisonné on Friday, November 2, at 4 p.m. at the FLAT Art Book Fair in Turin, Italy.

  LeWitt lived in Italy for much of his life, and hundreds of his wall drawings have been installed across the country. After an introduction to Artifex Press by President David Grosz and a demonstration of the catalogue raisonné by Editor Lindsay Aveilhé and Director of Research Chris Vacchio, curator and scholar Adachiara Zevi will give a talk that contextualizes LeWitt’s wall drawings historically and critically. This will be followed by a panel discussion with Zevi, artist Nicola De Maria, and gallerists Valentina Bonomo, Alessandra Bonomo, and Alfonso Artiaco, covering LeWitt’s move to Italy, the relationships he built across the country, and their impact on his work.

  Lindsay Aveilhé, Editor of the Sol LeWitt Wall Drawings Catalogue Raisonné, has been selected as a resident for the Mahler & LeWitt Studios Artists’ Books Residency in Spoleto, Italy.

  The residency will take place September 3-30, 2018, concluding in a two-day symposium (September 26 and 28, 2018) and a public program of events, exhibitions, and performances (September 29-30, 2018). The project is organised by Mahler & LeWitt Studios guest curator Dr. Jo Melvin, Reader in Archives and Special Collections at Chelsea College of Arts, UAL, London.

  Aveilhé will join artists, curators, writers, publishers, and designers engaged with artist's books, an important format within LeWitt's oeuvre. Residents will have access to an extensive unique artists’ books collection, owned by Primo De Donno, and the connected Viaindustriae Archive in Foligno.

• “Chronicling Artists' Oeuvres" Panel at PhotoHistory/PhotoFuture

  Carina Evangelista, Editor of the Chuck Close Catalogue Raisonné, and Ashley Levine, Archivist/Digital Resource Manager at Artifex Press will present the talk “Chronicling Artists' Oeuvres: The Critical Role of Photography in Catalogue Raisonné Research” during the panel titled Traveling and Documenting at PhotoHistory/PhotoFuture, a three-day conference of the archaeology and future of photography hosted by Rochester Institute of Technology. The talk will take place on Saturday, April 21, at 9:45 a.m.

  Evangelista and Levine will demonstrate the documentary role and challenges of photography in compiling the digital catalogues raisonnés of Chuck Close, Tim Hawkinson, Robert Irwin, Sol LeWitt, Agnes Martin, and Lucas Samaras, and simultaneously, the use of photography in their oeuvres. Close, afflicted with face blindness, has spent 50 years painting the human face with photography as the bedrock of his practice. Hawkinson, known primarily for sculptures, produced a number of photo collages. Samaras, a photographer himself, created boxes filled with boldly colored and heavily textured objects, many mixed with photographs. LeWitt famously privileged the idea for an artwork over the object, yet used documentary photography of his Wall Drawings as key evidence of these ephemeral works. Martin’s minimal paintings and Irwin’s spectral installations test the threshold of visibility, often defying the camera’s lens.

  Other presentations during Traveling and Documenting will be “Hocken Album 052: Creating Photographs with a Difference in Southern New Zealand” by Anna Petersen, Hocken Collections, University of Otago, Dunedin, New Zealand; and “George Eastman Goes to Newfoundland and Labrador” by Edith Cuerrier, The Rooms Provincial Archive of Newfoundland and Labrador/George Eastman Museum.   The New York Public Library will host the event Art Talks: Agnes Martin: Paintings | Richard Tuttle with Tiffany Bell on April 10, 2018 at 6:30PM in honor of the Agnes Martin catalogue raisonné, the most definitive and comprehensive study of her paintings to date. The event will take place in the Wachenheim Trustees Room in the Stephen A. Schwarzman Building at 476 Fifth Avenue (42nd St and Fifth Ave).

  Discussing the publication, Martin's life, and her career are Tiffany Bell, editor at Artifex Press of Agnes Martin: Paintings, and artist Richard Tuttle, who knew the artist from the 1960s until her death in 2004 and collaborated with her work on occasion.

  Editor Lindsay Aveilhé will give a presentation on the work for Sol LeWitt's catalogue raisonné at Pratt Institute on March 8, 2017 at 6 PM. The event is co-sponsored by the school's Fine Arts department, History of Art and Design department, and Library.

  

  In LeWitt’s 1971 article "Doing Wall Drawings," he stated, "The artist and the draftsman become collaborators in making the art. Each person draws a line differently and each person understands words differently." Wall Drawing #990, currently installed at the Pratt Institute Library, is one of over 1,350 wall drawings to be included in the Sol LeWitt Wall Drawings Catalogue Raisonné, and it provides a wonderful example of the lasting legacy of collaboration and renewal in Sol LeWitt’s wall drawing practice. As the Sol LeWitt Wall Drawings Catalogue Raisonné approaches its publication date, this presentation will describe the process, the discoveries, and the challenges of presenting a body of work that, by its very nature, evolves.

  Lindsay Aveilhé is Editor of the Sol LeWitt Wall Drawings Catalogue Raisonné, which will be published in Fall 2017 by Artifex Press. The catalogue will be the definitive list of LeWitt's most celebrated body of work, and will include several newly discovered wall drawings as well as previously unpublished installation histories, photography, and multimedia. A New York-based independent curator, Aveilhé's projects include Sol LeWitt and Lucy McKenzie at the Artist’s Institute, Another Place (MFA Alumni exhibition) at 205 Hudson Street Gallery, Hunter College, and Excavation, a 3-part exhibition of the Pratt MFA department. She was previously assistant curator at Issue Project Room and a researcher for Oxford University Press and Fairchild Books.

These discoveries led to a better understanding of the thematic changes in Martin’s work over the course of her life and informed the presentation of the retrospective.

  Tiffany Bell, Editor of Agnes Martin Catalogue Raisonné, will participate in a roundtable discussion on "New Scholarship on Agnes Martin" on February 13, 2015 at 5:30PM at the New School for Design, in partnership with the College Art Association Annual Conference.   FEATURED PANELISTS:

  • Tiffany Bell (Editor of Agnes Martin Catalogue Raisonné and co-curator of the Agnes Martin retrospective), who will speak about her work as editor of Martin's digital catalogue raisonné

  • Roger Cook (Royal Academy Schools), who will speak on his article theorizing Martin's sexuality in relation to her artwork, "Doorknob in the Desert: Agnes Martin's Queer Becoming"

  • Suzanne Hudson (Visual Studies Research Institute, University of Southern California), who will speak about her book on Martin's painting Night Sea, which is part of the MIT Press series of books on one work of art

  • Nancy Princenthal (School of Visual Arts, former senior editor for Art in America), who will speak about her forthcoming book, the first Agnes Martin biography/monograph

  The conversation will be moderated by artist Karen Schiff, who has reviewed books on Agnes Martin for Art Journal and Art in America. Her Agnes Martin Obituary Project has been exhibited in New York and in Marfa, Texas, and is going online at Art Journal.
